2nd Annual Breaking Traditions Art Quilt Exhibit at the American Sewing Expo! :)

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007
I am pleased to announce the second annual Breaking Traditions art quilt exhibit at the American Sewing Expo! :)

Breaking Traditions is an open call for art quilts to be exhibited at the ASE in Novi, Michigan in late September. This year’s theme is “Connections.” Nearly every aspect of life is held together by some kind of connection. Whether it is the physical fasteners holding together everyday objects or the relationships holding our spirits together, we encounter connections at every turn.

NEW FOR THIS YEAR!! An exhibit favorite will be chosen and awarded a prize package including hand dyed fabric from Cathy Arnett of Harmony Fibers and organizer of the Fabrications retreat in Northern Michigan (http://www.fabricationsretreat.com/location.html), a $25 gift certificate to Dharma Trading (http://www.dharmatrading.com/) and “Bead Creative Art Quilts” book from Nancy Eha (http://www.beadcreative.com/).

Each participant will also receive a Participation gift. A yahoo group has also been set up this year for anyone who wants to participate to keep track of announcements and to “meet” each other. If you would like to join the yahoo group, visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BreakingTraditonsArtQuiltExhibit/ or click on the link on my website.

Please find all the details at my website: http://www.fibraartysta.com/breaking%20traditions.htm. You can also see last year’s exhibit featuring art quilts about “Dia de los Muertos.”

I’m looking forward to another great exhibit! Thanks to all those who participated last year and if you have any questions, please send me an email!

Thanks!

2007 MAQS Workshop Series

2007 MAQS Workshop Series

Paducah, KY – Noted over the years for excellent workshop facilities and a variety of well-known instructors in the quilting industry, the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society offers a workshop for every type of quilter at any level of experience. Great opportunities are still available to broaden your quilting skills. Call soon to reserve your space!

Philippa Naylor will take students into Trapunto and Free-Motion Quilting **** on April 29-May 1. Quilting possibilities are explored by looking at design sources and a variety of quilts. Philippa shares her own approach to machine quilting designs. Students then create their own quilting design which, after discussion of marking methods, is transferred to fabric. Students begin sewing their wholecloth quilts with the teacher on hand to **** and encourage! This **** is for more advanced students who have some experience of free-motion machine quilting.

REGISTRATION FEE: $350/$320 Friends of MAQS; due date 3/15/07.

Carol Taylor will teach Sensuous Lines, Curves & **** on September 20-22. This workshop will result in two unique quilts, using couching as a main design element. Carol shares the secrets of piecing skinny lines and curves combined with couching yarns for the centerpiece of the first quilt! In the second quilt, students will learn about composition, balancing color, texture and size. She will also teach how to quilt “perfect” concentric circles, couching and how to finish a quilt with facings instead of bindings.

REGISTRATION FEE: $300/$270 Friends of MAQS; due date 08/03/07

Bored with repeated block quilts? Wondering how quilting can make-or break-the artistic effect of your quilt? Then this **** is for you! On October 4-6, Pepper Cory will lead the aspiring quilt designer out of the one-block rut with Two Blocks are Better than One! Learn to design a medallion quilt using two traditional and easy to piece patchwork blocks. Then choose quilting designs that make your quilt design truly special.

REGISTRATION FEE: $350/$330 Friends of MAQS; due date 8/17/07

Ann Fahl will be Telling a Story on October 11-13. Students will make a unique wall quilt of their own design in this multi-day workshop! Stitch a simple message, idea or story into a quilt, representational or abstract. The quilt will be fabricated on a simple patchwork background. This becomes a foundation for **** fabric, machine appliqué, free-motion embroidery and exploration of thread. Methods of machine quilting will be discussed as well as other embellishment possibilities. Knowledge of basic machine piecing and appliqué skills is necessary. The student must be willing to stretch her/his creative ability.

REGISTRATION FEE: $350/$320 Friends of MAQS; due date 8/24/07

To register, contact MAQS at 270-442-8856 or info@quiltmuseum.org. On-line registration is available at www.quiltmuseum.org. A $50 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of registration.

The MAQS Workshop Series is sponsored by Bernina, Flynn Quilt Frame Company and OLFA-North America.

The Museum of the American Quilter’s Society is a non-profit institution located in downtown Paducah, KY. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, year-round, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April-October. The Museum is handicapped accessible.

The Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency in the Commerce Cabinet, provides operational support for The Museum of the American Quilter’s Society with state tax dollars and federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
