Virginia Holloway's interest in art began in early childhood. She had classes with a local artist and at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. She studied art in high school, as well as at the University of Texas, The School of the Museum of Fine arts, Boston and at Massachusetts College of Art. She exhibited her paintings, mainly abstract expressionist works, in several group and one-person shows in the Boston area.

In 1985, Virginia began to study quilts, especially old style Amish quilts, enjoying their use of color and abstraction. Using sewing skills taught by her mother, she began learning to design and make quilts, eventually devoting her time to quilting making.
