I bought the 2.5" x 4.5" four-patch blocks from an antique store in 1999! No two of the blocks were the same size, they were very crooked, and they didn't appear to have any sort of consistent scheme (I'm not sure why I wanted them in the first place...). I worked fairly intuitively, trying to make each one unique and letting the fabrics dictate the quilting. About halfway through I realized these were my refrigerator wardrobe--I took the theme very literally--and added a magnet to the back of each finished piece. My favorite part of these quilts is they look different as they move--I rotate them, change the alignment, change the groupings, and so on nearly every time I'm in my kitchen
