The text is machine embroidered onto the quilt in English and Hebrew. The quilt incorporates machine needle felting, machine embroidery, photo transfer and hand beading. I found the leaf for the photo transfers on a trip to New York State. The scan was manipulated in Photoshop. The design was developed as my final project for an Introduction to Adobe Creative Suite class, and it is the first quilt I have designed using a computer graphics program.
From the the 7th day of Sukkot (the fall Harvest Festival) until Passover, Jews insert a prayer for rain and wind into the Amidah, a silent prayer which is recited three times a day. During the summer months, it asks for dew to descend. The origin of the prayer is unknown, but it relates to our agricultural past. This quilt illustrates the text.
