Hand appliqué, tulle overlay, regular crayon used to darken some colors, and a lot of very close machine quilting to simulate the grain of the sandstone. The traditional binding was pieced to continue the design to the very edge.
In late May of this year, we went Out West on vacation, and toured a wondrous place, Antelope Canyon, just outside of Page, Arizona. This canyon is tall and very narrow, carved out of sandstone by the action of floodwaters and wind. Our Navajo guide (it's on their reservation) explained the canyon's history and pointed out particular places where non-flash pictures would generate incredible results. My quilt is based on my unretouched accidental photo taken with my digital camera, showing the light shining through the top of the canyon.
