Techniques Used:
Inspired by two photos taken by John Hartgerink at Bluebonnet Swamp in Baton Rouge, LA (with permission)
Artist Statement:
This quilt was inspired by a series of photographs of ice forming in a pond in January. Some of the leaves on the pond floor are visible through the ice, including the brilliant leaves of the native Red Maple. I overlaid the entire piece with an iridescent organza to resemble the ice layer and quilted it in a pattern based on ice crystals as they are forming. Yes, it does get this cold in the deep south, although not very often!
