Hand-dyed cotton sateen and cheesecloth, pieced and appliquéd, beading, thread painting on water-soluble stabilizer. My inspiration was my own research into the four elements, trying to decide what to portray in my Journal Quilt. The mounting evidence of the damage being done to the world’s coral reefs grabbed my attention.
We've heard a lot in recent years about the damage being done to the earth by climate change and pollution, but less about the damage it is doing to the coral reefs, some of the most magical marine ecosystems. If we do not take steps to reverse this damage, my grandchildren may never have the opportunity to see a healthy reef, alive with brightly colored fish. They will be left with coral ghost towns and the ghosts of the fish- hence the title, 2051: A Sea Odyssey.
