Confluence

Confluence by Julia Altshuler of Marlborough, Massachusetts

Techniques Used:

Cotton fabrics, fusible web, cotton batting, thread. Raw edge appliqué, free motion machine quilting.

Artist Statement:

Each year, we visit my in-laws in Calgary. Each year, the family dynamic is difficult for me. Each year, we get away for a short time to the Canadian Rockies. This quilt was inspired by one of those get-aways, a hike in Yoho National Park, a place, despite roaring crashing of water, is one of perfect respite and peace. The Yoho river, chief headwater of the Kicking Horse, is glacier fed and silty. The Kicking Horse River is lake fed and clear. In Yoho, British Columbia, the two rivers collide to form one greater, mightier river. The rivers were my hopes for marriage: disparate, whole, dynamic, flowing, constant, powerful and fluid.
