A visit to Don's web page is a treat for the eyes! Vibrant color, used in perfect balance within simple patterns, is the keypoint in each of his pieces. My initial reaction to this pop of color is to smile!
Don Mettler, an accomplished needleartist, has been making quilts for more than 20 years. After a career as a needlepoint designer and teacher, traveling the US, Canada, and Mexico, Don was first influenced by an interior decorator, who suggested he make a wall quilt instead of buying a wallhanging when he was decorating his home. He has been quilting ever since! Don is a self-taught quilter and has only taken one quilting class and that was from Nancy Halpern, who approach he really likes.
While he keeps up with the latest magazines and books, Don respects traditional quilt design, too. Once told by an English embroiderer that she didn't know why everyone used Jacobian designs for crewel work when they weren't any good originally, Don's attitude is that he doesn't want to recreate the past, but learn to create it in a better way!
Don's quilts, which take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to complete, are completely machine sewn and he often has two or more works in progress at any given time. Ocassionally he sends his tops out to be quilted by others, but most often quilts them himself, although the quilting itself is not his favorite part of the process.
