When I was thinking of symbols of our culture, I went back
to my childhood and began focusing on parades and marching bands. Americans
celebrate many special events with parades. And we all know, a parade
is not a parade with out the rhythm and music of the marching bands.
While growing up in Iowa, Municipal bands were very much a
part of small town culture. I, myself, spent many hours as a marching
band participant and lived this experience of our culture. In this quilt, I
tried to recreate a typical parade scene which included my father,
two brothers and myself marching in the band. I used an old photograph to help
me with some of the details and this took me on a trip
down memory lane. Perhaps this quilt may take you down memory lane as well!
