CAN RED AND BLUE EVER MAKE PURPLE?

Techniques:  This piece started out as two pieces of white fabric.  I painted one dark blue with some touches of blue violet and on the second one I free-hand painted an outline of the U.S. with red paint and then painted the space around it with light blue.  After the fabrics dried I ripped them into strips and wove them together, letting the raw edges of the strips fray.  It was layered with batting and a backing fabric then machine quilted in a static pattern.

Artist Statement:  The last two presidential elections created such derision in this country.  The differences between the “blue states” and the “red states” escalated to an unbelievable point where it seems there could never be common ground.  Now with another presidential election less then a year away is there any hope that these “Red” and “Blue” voters can agree on any one candidate or are we going to see the lines drawn deeper?

The torn strips of fabric that make up this quilt with the strings of loose thread hanging could also suggest another title for this piece, IS AMERICA COMING APART AT THE SEAMS? would also be a good title for it.
