My father was a military journalist in World War II and this photo, from his division newspaper, has been one of my prized possessions for many years. It was taken in eastern France in the spring of 1945 but the scene is not so different from anywhere in war -- the soldiers, the desolation. The traditional Broken Dishes pattern symbolizes everything destroyed in war.

We hope and pray the soldiers are marching away from the ruins and toward a better future.
