Believe it or not, this is actually a quilt: three layers (paper, foam core, paper) plus appliques of canvas in the center (to contain a yardstick, which will hold the quilt aloft and let it function as a sign in the upcoming peace demonstration in San Francisco on Sunday). There are also appliques of paper bearing the various words. Between now and Sunday I'll be stitching the appliques down and adding some color to the paintings. It seemed important to me, in protesting this likely American use of
highly engineered death-dealing equipment, to make an object that bears the marks of the human hand - one with imprecise lettering, a little hand stitching and some visible brushstrokes. A reminder, maybe , of the other, more appealing uses to which our human limbs and brains can be put, when our leaders steer the ship of state more competently.
