Quilt Entries Invited for Sawtooth Contest

PADUCAH, KY- The Museum of the American Quilter's Society invites quilt entries for the 2008 New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Sawtooth Contest. Each year this international contest sponsored by Fairfield Processing Corp., Janome America, Inc. and Clover challenges quiltmakers to create an innovative quilt based on a specific traditional pattern.

Entry form, fee and slides or digital images for the 2008 contest are due at the Museum by November 1, 2007; entry fee is $40/$10 Friends of MAQS. From the slide or digital image entries submitted, jurors will select 18 quilts for the exhibit and for award consideration. Quilts are selected on excellence in design and technique in addition to the quilt's contribution to an exhibit showing the wide range of designs the Sawtooth pattern can inspire. Selected finalists will be asked to send their quilts to MAQS by December 2, 2007, for judging. Cash awards are given to first through fifth places in the amounts of $3,000, $1,500, $750, $500 and $300, respectively. All other finalists are awarded $100 each. All 18 quilts will be on exhibit at MAQS in Spring 2008.

In conjunction with the American Quilter's Society, a catalog will be published, featuring each finalist and award-winning quilt in full color, with a photo of the maker and information about the quilt's development in addition to patterns and tips. Following the exhibit at MAQS, the quilts will travel through December 31, 2008. ART QUILTS LOWELL 2007: A National Juried Exhibition

August 2 – October 21, 2007

ART QUILTS LOWELL 2007 is a national juried exhibition, organized by the Brush Art Gallery, to identify and encourage quilt artists. The 2007 exhibition has been expanded, from previous years, to include art quilts from artists throughout the United States. The exhibition will provide an overview of some of the finest quilts being produced in this country; it is a feature of the 2007 Lowell Quilt Festival to be held August 9 -12, 2007.

ELIGIBILITY: Artists who are residents of any state in the United States

METHOD OF SELECTION: Slides will be juried by nationally recognized, award winning quilt artist/educators Nancy Halpern and Rayna Gillman.

ENTRY PROCEDURE: Artists may submit up to three entries. A $35 non-refundable fee made out to the Brush Art Gallery is required with entries.

* Only original art quilts completed within the past 4 years are eligible. All quilts must be no larger in height or width than 4 feet and must be ready for hanging with a 3-6 inch sleeve (large enough to comfortably accommodate a wood dowel or wood/plastic slat). All quilts must be accompanied by dowels or slats. Dowels need hardware and slats should have hardware or holes for hanging. Quilts that don't meet these requirements will not be accepted for hanging. Quilts should be clearly labeled on reverse with artist's name and title of quilt.
* Please submit two museum quality 35 mm slides (no glass mounts—cardboard or plastic only). The total number of entries is three, which means there can be six images, which includes a detail image for each quilt.
* Label each slide with your name, the title of work and an arrow or dot in the upper right hand corner indicating the top of the slide. Number the slides using 1 and 1a, 2 and 2a, 3 and 3a (the a slide is the detail image).
* On a separate sheet of 8 ½ x 11 in. paper (typed), put your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. List the slides by title (indicating full view or detail of quilt), year completed, materials used, and quilt dimensions (height x width). Also include a short description of the inspiration for the quilt (no more than a paragraph).
* Self-addressed stamped postcard to receive Jury Decision information.
* Mail application form, entry fee, slides, slide list, e-mail address or postcard for Jury Decision (on postcard print your full name and address and stamp) application form, and SASE for return of slides to:

Call for Cool Quilt Shops in Texas???

Spike Gillespie has asked if any of you have any tips on cool
quilt shops in Texas for an article she is writing Email
replies to spike@spikeg.com ... You can post onlist, too,
as we all love to hear about special shops! -Judy

I'm Spike Gillespie. You might remember me-- last summer
you graciously allowed me to post information about
the quilting documentary I'm working on. I am currently
writing the tiniest of articles for a little Texas
magazine about cool quilt shops in Texas. We're not
looking for the biggest or even necessarily the "best"--
we're looking for places that are unique, cozy, independent.
Places we want to point our readers to. And we're hoping to
have the recommendations spread out geographically across
the state. Would you be willing to post this call for cool
shops? I'm on a tight deadline and, as noted, the piece is
so tiny there won't be room to list all the responses or
too many details.

But if it's okay with you, I'd just love input from your
list members. Thanks for considering this. Spike
